The Love-Haight Case Files

Supernatural beings are willing to fight for their legal rights!

Since the Summer of Love, the Haight-Ashbury district of San Francisco has been known for attracting weird and unconventional souls, but things got even stranger when the monsters moved in.

Magic has returned to the world and with it a host of supernatural creatures—not just vampires and ghosts, but sentient gargoyles, ghouls, sprites, faeries, and more. The frightened citizenry, holier-than-thou bigots, headline-seeking reporters, and harried police refer to them as OTs (Other-Than-Humans), but Thomas Brock and Evelyn Love believe even supernatural creatures have legal rights.

Delve into their case files for a genre-bending mix of mystery, horror, suspense, thrills, courtroom drama, and romance. The city’s OT element is sometimes malevolent, sometimes misunderstood, and often discriminated against. Brock and Love represent them all, dead, undead, or alive—whatever the case, whatever the species.

Jean Rabe:

USA Today best-seller, Jean Rabe’s impressive writing career spans decades, starting as a newspaper reporter and bureau chief.
From there she went on to become the director of RPGA, a co-editor with Martin H. Greenberg for DAW books, and, most notably, Rabe is an award-winning author of more than forty science fiction/fantasy and murder mystery thrillers.
She writes mysteries and fantasies, because life is too short to be limited to one genre–and she does it with dogs tangled at her feet, because life is too short not to be covered in fur.

Excerpts:

Excerpt One

The coed screamed again as she turned back to look at him, her eyes wide, her blonde hair tangling as she raced pell-mell down the street without looking where she was going. Nuz Kaytong reached out a decaying arm, one skeletal finger completely denuded of rotted flesh, a flash of white against the gray, green, and black of shambling torso.

“GRRRRRR!” he sneered, stretching toward her. “ARRRRRG!”

She screamed louder and longer, causing her boyfriend, a step ahead, to look back just as she tripped on the edge of a pothole and lurched forward. Luckily for her … and Kaytong … her boyfriend reached out and caught her elbow, steadying her from falling.

“GRRRRRR!” Kaytong menaced again as he took a moment to glance around him to see other teens and young couples chased by his fellow zombies. A few humans were bolting forward, ahead of the ravenous pack, but many, many more were being overcome and surrounded by the rest of his zombie crew. He turned his attention back to his personal prey.

“C’mon,” the boyfriend yelled, his voice cracking into a higher octave. “Just three more blocks and we’re safe.”

The blonde exhaled a deep breath and sucked in a new one. “I … I … don’t know if I can make it, baby.”

Kaytong slackened his pace. High speed shambling takes a lot of stamina when your muscles are literally rotting off your bones. He watched the boyfriend pull at her arm, trying to get her to run faster.

“You have to Darla. Just a few more blocks. We have to live!”

Darla shook her head, her long, sweat-soaked locks twirling like a dirty mop. “Only one of us needs to live. We can still win if only one of us survives …”

That did it. Kaytong increased his speed from moderate shamble to full press stumbling, lunging forward, arms outstretched. Now they both had to die. He might be a zombie, but that didn’t mean he didn’t have a personal code. No one who broke character could live … could win.

He had just tagged the blonde on her shoulder with the cold, decaying flesh of his hand when a beam of intense white light assaulted him.
